Colonnades Restoration Project
We’re proud to share that the Colonnade restoration project has now been successfully completed. As one of our area’s most recognisable coastal landmarks, the Colonnade hold both historical importance and sentimental value for residents and visitors alike. Our recent works were designed to preserve this heritage, enhance safety, and improve the visitor experience for generations to come.
What We’ve Achieved…
-
Specialist conservation teams carried out essential repairs to the structure, addressing long‑term weathering, erosion, and wear. This included:
- Stabilisation and repair of concrete columns and stonework
- Clearing and reinstatement of draining system
- Treating and replacing corroded fixings
- Applying protective coatings designed for coastal environments
These works were completed using conservation‑appropriate techniques to preserve the architectural character of the Colonnades.
-
Where possible, original materials were retained and carefully restored. Where replacement was necessary, new elements were crafted to match historical detailing. Works included:
- Repointing and re-finishing masonry
- Restoring decorative features
- Repainting using heritage‑approved colour palettes, including ‘Llandudno Blue’
Our goal was to bring back the Colonnades’ original charm while ensuring long‑term durability.
-
To ensure the space is welcoming and safe, we installed:
- Improved lighting
- New handrails and balustrade on stairs and upper level
These enhancements make the Colonnades easier and safer to enjoy year round.
-
Respecting the natural and coastal setting was a priority. The project included:
- Eco friendly restoration materials
- Low impact construction methods
- Measures to protect surrounding habitats e.g. Installation of bird and bat boxes
Sustainability shaped decision making throughout the project.
-
The restored Colonnades now offer a brighter, cleaner, safer and more inviting space for walking, photography, sheltering from the weather, and enjoying uninterrupted views along the seafront. This project forms part of our wider commitment to protect heritage assets and enhance the visitor experience across the waterfront.
-
With the restoration now complete, we’re focusing on continued maintenance and exploring opportunities to activate the space further through events, interpretation, and visitor information.
We hope you enjoy the refreshed Colonnades as much as we enjoyed safeguarding them.
