Villages of Hiraethog
The Hiraethog area is a landscape of open skies, heather moorland, forests and upland lakes. Remote, peaceful and full of character, Mynydd Hiraethog is perfect for walkers, wildlife‑lovers and anyone looking to escape into wide open countryside.
-
One of the main villages in the area, Cerrigydrudion makes a great base for exploring. It’s also home to Glan‑y‑Gors Park, a British Championship go‑karting circuit that’s hugely popular for days out.
-
A starting point for walks onto Mynydd Hiraethog, Pentrefoelas also offers a warm welcome in the Riverside Chocolate House and Tearoom. The parish church has impressive stained‑glass windows (look out for the hidden strawberry). Historically, this was linked to Ysbyty Ifan, once a sanctuary for medieval pilgrims.
-
Set by the River Alwen, this village has been a resting place for travellers and drovers for centuries. The Crown Inn is a Grade II‑listed drovers’ inn once favoured by William Wordsworth, and the area has links to notable Welsh literary and historical figures.
-
The heart of Hiraethog is Llyn Brenig, offering walking, cycling, mountain biking, fishing, sailing and birdwatching, with an excellent visitor centre and lakeside café. Nearby Llyn Alwen provides quieter routes through forest and moorland.
For more outdoor adventures including red squirrel spotting head into Clocaenog Forest.
-
The southernmost village in Conwy County, Llangwm offers peaceful self‑catering stays and incredibly dark skies for stargazing. The village was also a key location during the Tithe Wars of the 1880s.
