Penmachno
Penmachno is a peaceful hideaway village tucked deep within the Machno Valley, surrounded by hills, forest and spectacular scenery. It’s a quiet escape that feels wonderfully remote, yet it’s only a short drive from Betws‑y‑Coed.
-
One of the most striking routes into Penmachno is the narrow mountain road from Ffestiniog, which drops dramatically into the valley before reaching the village and its 18th‑century stone bridge.
The local church holds an impressive collection of early Christian burial stones, giving Penmachno a deep sense of heritage.
-
Penmachno is a fantastic base for outdoor activities. The surrounding hills and Gwydyr Forest offer walking, riding and excellent mountain biking trails suitable for a range of abilities.
Just a few miles north you’ll find the dramatic Conwy Falls, where the Machno and Conwy rivers meet in a series of powerful cascades before flowing toward the Fairy Glen near Betws‑y‑Coed.
-
In the hills west of the village sits TÅ· Mawr Wybrnant, a modest farmhouse with huge cultural significance. Now cared for by the National Trust, it was the birthplace of William Morgan, the 16th‑century bishop who produced the first full translation of the Bible into Welsh. The restored house contains Bibles from around the world, including Morgan’s original 1588 translation, considered one of the most important books in Welsh history.
