Llanwrst
Llanrwst is a handsome historic town on the River Conwy and often considered the ‘capital’ of the Vale of Conwy. Surrounded by green hills and rich heritage, it’s a great base for exploring both the countryside and the area’s cultural landmarks.
-
Llanrwst sits beside Gwydir Forest, a network of scenic woodland trails including the Lady Mary Walk, which introduces local stories and viewpoints. Further into the hills you’ll find the peaceful lakes Llyn Geirionydd and Llyn Crafnant, popular for gentle walks and picnics.
-
The town centre is full of independent shops, cafés and local produce, ideal for browsing after a day of exploring.
-
The town’s iconic three‑arched bridge, traditionally linked to Inigo Jones, leads to Tu Hwnt i’r Bont, a beautifully restored 15th‑century house now cared for by the National Trust.
Nearby, St Grwst’s Church holds the Gwydir Chapel, home to the stone coffin said to belong to Llywelyn the Great, one of Wales’s most important medieval princes. A short walk away, Gwydir Uchaf Chapel is known for its unique painted ceiling.
Just outside the town, Gwydir Castle a rare Tudor manor once home to the powerful Wynn family offers atmospheric rooms and historic gardens to explore.
