Purple Flag
Llandudno Begins Its Journey Toward Purple Flag Status...
Work is now underway to secure Purple Flag accreditation for Llandudno, marking a major step in enhancing and future proofing the town’s evening and night‑time offer. The project is being supported through funding from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund, secured by Conwy County Borough Council to strengthen the region’s visitor economy.
To guide the process, the Council has brought together a new multi‑agency Purple Flag Working Group, ensuring that every aspect of the town’s evening experience is considered. Representatives from tourism, retail, hospitality, leisure, community groups, North Wales Police and Mostyn Estates are all contributing to the development of a safe, welcoming and vibrant environment between 5pm and 5am.

The Purple Flag programme, administered by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM), recognises towns and cities that offer an outstanding evening and night‑time experience. Accreditation celebrates places that balance:
- Safety
- Diverse activities
- Vibrant culture
- Strong partnership working
- A welcoming atmosphere for all
-
As part of the early stages of developing Llandudno’s Purple Flag application, the Working Group has begun mapping out the town’s existing evening and night time features and identifying areas that could be explored further. Initial discussions have noted aspects such as:
- Existing CCTV coverage
- Policing and community safety presence
- Ongoing safety-related initiatives
- A varied hospitality offer
Alongside these, the group is also beginning to look at potential areas for development to support the town’s long term evening and night time ambitions, including:
- Ways to improve accessibility
- Options to strengthen transport provision
- Opportunities to support more early-evening cultural activity
If successful, Llandudno would become the first Purple Flag town in North Wales, and notably, the proposed zone would be the first in the UK to include a pier
-
The Purple Flag application will be submitted this spring, followed by an independent assessment in the summer. If accredited, Llandudno will join a growing network of towns and cities recognised for excellence in their evening and night-time economy.
