About

Ar y gweill can be translated as “work in progress”. Literally, it means “on the knitting needles”.

Graphic designer Anna Farrall will present research along with a publication and a series of workshops. This work will be exhibited as Ar y Gweill: In Progress in Mostyn’s Learning and Education space from 14–28 March 2026. Following the close on 28 March, a selected strand of the research will be reconfigured and presented in Gallery 6.

The Welsh Language Measure 2011 came into effect in 2016. It has been over a decade since the supporting Bilingual Design Guide was written. In that time creative practitioners across Wales have produced bilingual work that goes far beyond official frameworks, exploring visual hierarchies, semiotics, celebrating identity and culture.

Anna has collaborated with nearly twenty creative practitioners through interviews and mentoring. Project collaborators include writers, translators, designers, artists, and academics who have helped shape Wales’s linguistic landscape and history. Anna has also worked closely with students at Llandrillo College, engaging them through workshops and work experience.

The project encourages opportunities for exchange, collaboration, and reflection by actively engaging the public and creative practitioners in knowledge-sharing and collaboration, and by nurturing emerging talent.

This is a practice-based research project focused on the visual communication of Welsh and bilingual design in Wales. It is funded by the Arts Council of Wales and the Conwy Arts Trust.
