How to spend a day in Betws-y-Coed
Morning: Scenic walks
Tucked in the heart of Eryri (Snowdonia), Betws-y-Coed is the perfect base for a day of natural beauty, adventure, and local charm. Whether you're after peaceful woodland walks or adrenaline-pumping activities, this bustling mountain village has it all.
Whether you’ve arrived by train at the scenic Betws-y-Coed railway station or parked up nearby, start your day with a peaceful walk along the riverside from the village to Miners Bridge — a quaint crossing steeped in local history. Continue through the forest to the magnificent Swallow Falls, where the rushing waters provide a breathtaking backdrop. Take a break at the nearby Swallow Falls Inn, ideal for a hearty breakfast or coffee before your afternoon begins.
Afternoon:
Next, wander back into the village of Betws-Y-Coed to explore its welcoming shops, filled with outdoor gear, local crafts, and gifts like Galeri Betws-y-Coed, which showcases local artists and photographers inspired by the national park.
You can then go on to visit the Conwy Valley Railway Museum for a nostalgic ride on a miniature steam train and a browse through its charming collection of railway memorabilia. For a dose of culture and local heritage, step into the St Michael’s Old Church, dating back to the 14th century. This small, atmospheric chapel is the oldest building in the village and offers a quiet insight into Betws-y-Coed’s past.
Recharge with a coffee and homemade cake at Alpine Coffee Shop, a relaxed drink at the Gwydyr Hotel or try Y Stablau, a cosy spot with hearty pub food and a great garden terrace - plenty of choice for every mood.
Late Afternoon: Forest Fun
Ready for some action? Just outside the village, Zip World Fforest awaits. Take on the thrilling Fforest Coaster, navigate the treetop ropes course, or try Plummet 2 — a heart-racing 100ft drop through a trapdoor! Or discover underground adventure at nearby Go Below underground Adventures for exploration trips through abandoned mines located in the heart of Eryri (Snowdonia).
Not up for adrenaline? Take a quieter pace and immerse yourself in nature again and explore the Fairy Glen, a magical woodland gorge where the river tumbles through moss-covered rocks — a short drive or scenic walk from the village. It’s a peaceful setting, and you will need your camera!
If you are feeling more energetic, try one of the forest trails around Llyn Elsi, a reservoir nestled above the village. It’s a circular walk with beautiful mountain views and peaceful woodland.
Evening: Local fare and twilight views
After your adventures, you could head to Conwy Valley Falls café or return to the village as the day winds down. Book a table at the Royal Oak Hotel, where you can enjoy locally sourced Welsh dishes in a warm and cosy setting — the perfect end to a day packed with discovery, fun, and fresh air.
Whether you're here for the views, the village, or the adventure, Betws-y-Coed offers the ultimate exploration day out.
